SoundsLikeTexas.com new Texas Music reviews:
Koch Records seems to have an affinity to Texas Music, or at least that's how we choose to
interpret their latest offering. They are reissuing a few gems from the past including the
classic self titled, Willis Alan Ramsey. Lyle Lovett calls it "one of the greatest
records of all time." Released in 1972, as Ramsey was establishing himself among the
elite singer/songwriters on Austin's cosmic cowboy scene, these songs became more famous
via covers by others. Leon Russell, Jimmy Buffett, Waylon, America, and even Captain &
Tennille. Most recently, Shawn Colvin chose "Satin Sheets" for her Cover Girl
record. This is a must have for fans of classic Texas country music.
Also in the bunch is a two record set from George Jones. The Battle and Memories of Us,
were both originally released shortly after George's divorce from Tammy Wynette. These
classic recordings infer all of George and Tammy's marital bliss and blood. The tumultuous
relationship of Country Music's first couple is at the forefront of these songs. "The
Battle", "I Can't Get Over What Lovin' You Has Done", "The
Nightmare", "Wean Me", Memories of Us", "She Should Belong To
Me" and "Hit and Run" are all here and all play together like a George and
Tammy photo album. Considering how these two profound artists' careers and lives turned
out, this music packs more punch now, while providing an historical reference to Country
Music's richer days.
Hank Thompson was crowned the "King of Western Swing" some 60 years ago, and has
since been welcomed into the Country Music Hall Of Fame. His band, the "Brazos Valley
Boys" were named the #1 Country Western Band for 14 years straight by Billboard
Magazine. Those accolades considered together with honky tonk and western swing classics
like "Drivin' Nails In My Coffin", "Bubbles In My Beer", "Cocaine
Blues", and "Deep Elm Blues", make Dance Ranch and Songs For Rounders
essential country recordings. Thanks to Koch Records you can get them both on one CD.
With numerous number one hits and gold and platinum albums, Charley Pride is one of the
most successful country artists of all time. The one-time baseball player turned to
country music in 1963, and Texas Music is better for it. Koch Records has already reissued
Charley's The Sensational Charley Pride and Live At Panther Hall, and now offers Songs of
Pride...Charley That Is.
Complete with original album photos, this package rings a colorless note not easily found
upon it's release. Even today, the sad racial inequality in country music makes Charley's
accomplishments that much greater. His incomparable smoky, deep, rich voice highlights
this excellent collection of songs, including his smash hit, "The Easy Part's
Over."
Lefty Frizzell pays tribute to one-time Texas resident Jimmie Rodgers on Sings The Songs
of Jimmie Rodgers. Lefty's interpretations of "The Singing Brakeman's" most
famous songs are set in sparse arrangement, some with only guitar accompaniment. These
Great Depression era songs find an appropriate setting within Lefty's relaxed, drawling
tenor. The marriage of song and voice here is a match made in heaven. Rodgers himself sold
millions of records to poor, rural Southerners. Country blues gets a honky tonk makeover
from Lefty Frizzell.
Look for more classic Texas Music from Koch Records coming soon. For now, do yourself a
favor and relive some of Texas Music's brightest moments. --Gary C. Moore
